Dr. Steve Perry is on a mission to transform the educational experience for all children. Born into poverty to a teenage mother, Steve Perry knows first hand, success in life is determined by where you end, not where you start. This philosophy inspired him, early on, to transform the lives of poor and minority children everywhere by providing them with access to a college education.
Starting his first education program, ConnCap (Connecticut Collegiate Awareness Program) in 1998, ConnCap sent 100% of its low-income first-generation graduates to four-year colleges for six year, until the establishment of the Capital Preparatory Magnet School in 2004. Located in Hartford Connecticut’s lowest performing district, Capital Prep has sent 100% of its graduates to four-year colleges since its inception.
Capital Preparatory has been recognized by US News & Word Report as one of America’s Best High Schools. Dr. Perry’s uncompromising, no-excuses approach to designing the ideal educational experience for children has led to his being featured on CNN’s documentary “Black in America,” appearances on numerous shows on MSNBC and Fox and an appointment as education contributor for CNN.
A best-selling author, Dr. Perry has written four books that received rave review. Education activist Bill Cosby calls Dr. Perry’s writing ‘pure gold’ and education champion Michelle Rhee says of Dr. Perry’s newest title, “Push Has Come To Shove“, “It should be read by everyone who wonders what’s wrong with our schools”. Dr. Perry spares no sacred cows when describing what steps need to be taken to ensure that all American schools, urban or suburban, deliver a first-rate education – the kind of schooling that will return the United States to the top of the global education rankings.
